What do some people feel could happen that day? Here’s a brief list of a few of the things people predict could happen.
An asteroid, meteor or comet might impact the surface of the earth.
A solar storm could cause devastating effects on the electronics of all the earth.
The earth’s poles could shift, causing the earth’s crust to shift.
A giant gravity wave from an exploding black hole in the center of the galaxy could impact the earth.
Jesus could return to the earth.
Aliens could invade the earth.
A gigantic gamma ray burst could destroy half the earth’s ozone layer.
Cosmic rays could harm us all.
A flu pandemic could wipe out millions.
World War III could break out, killing countless people.
A super volcano could erupt and cause untold damage and loss of life.
Global warming could raise ocean water levels, wiping out coastal areas.
Nanotechnology could change life as we know it.
A nearby supernova could have an impact on our entire solar system.
A nuclear accident could make large areas uninhabitable.
Fill in the blank.
It seems that many conclusions base themselves on so-called scientific evidence that many say isn’t true science. The Mayans used more than one calendar. Their calendars made use of a strong religious element. While they knew some things, the source of that knowledge remains a subject of controversy. They also debate among themselves about the significance of the date.
There are nearly as many opinions about this time as there are people. Has anyone bothered to check with the Mayans themselves to see what they think about it?
Research has been done in this area. The Mayan elders believe the earth will change and that there will also be changes in the consciousness of the world that last seven years and start around 2012. They actually believe the seven year period has already begun. Due to the confusion surrounding the issue, the elders are actually in the process of writing a book about it.
Could something happen that day? No doubt it will. Something happens every day. Will there be any survivors? Of course there will be. Whatever events happen that day, they are out of our hands. However, they don’t always turn out bad or even destructive.
There are many events listed in Revelation that happen during the Tribulation. Some of the things discussed sound like judgments poured out by God on the earth. But even in those cases, some of those same things could actually happen any time.
Scholars often point to other cultures that seem to agree on the significance of December 21, 2012. However, when closely examined they don’t reveal themselves as date-setters at all.
Didn’t Nostradamus predict something would happen in 2012? Nearly every researcher of Nostradamus disagrees on most things he wrote. His quatrains are beyond human comprehension and note that its easy to assign a meaning to an event that has already happened. Vague words can be twisted to mean anything the interpreters want them to mean. No matter how you look at it, though, there is nothing at all about the specific date of December 21, 2012 in the writings of Nostradamus.
Several ancient cultures have writings about a terrible apocalypse that must happen in 2012! Look again. Yes, there are writings about a coming apocalypse. Many cultures seem to have that in common. Did you know that all cultures came from one source and therefore have their roots in the same knowledge base? Still, not one of them outside of the Mayans and the Hopi say anything unusual will happen on a specific date in 2012. Assigning a special date to a general statement lacks both scientific proof and common sense.
The bible talks about it! On December 21, 2012 or sometime around then, terrible calamities will befall the earth. Isn’t that what the book of Revelation says? No! This date is found nowhere in Scripture. While some of the things expected to happen on the above date sound like events discussed in Revelation, no specific date exists.
Neither Nostradamus, ancient cultures, or the bible specifically set the date of December 21, 2012 aside from any other day in history. I know that doesn’t sell books, advertising or movies. It is, however, the truth.
This subject is far too involved to completely address in one article. The untold story is that there may be another explanation or it may be nothing at all. Either way, don’t change your plans. Whatever happens, God will still be in control on that day.
People are so prone to dwell on the worst possible thing that can happen. Don’t get swept up in the wave of doomsday prophecies because the future is still as bright as the promises of God.
And now a new development that came out after I first wrote this article. According to You Tube, the December 2012 date is a miscalculation. The day of doom has been "postponed" until 2208. Our source for this information is a scientist who wrote in the November issue of the journal Natural Science and Technology.
The error was caused by confusion surrounding the Mayan calendar and the calendar date-keeping system we use today. Something got lost in the translation! But don't worry. That allows more time for sequels, books, and the development of a planned TV series.
Confusion is also caused by many people who don't understand the qualifications of a true prophet that comes from God. His prophecies are 100% accurate! For more information about this aspect, go to our article titled "Doomsday". It explains the bible test of prophecy, who fails it and who passes it.
This has proven itself a very hot theological topic in the past few years. No doubt, time may be running out for us but not for the reason many think. However, this doesn't mean we aren't in for some kinds of changes. Plans at this writing are to make every effort to keep up with events by posting a 2012 watch type of column every day for the coming year.
